I hope that one day, we will allow intricate objects to fill our everyday lives, and our everyday ideas. Minimalism saddens me deeply. The ornate has never been so accessible or so democratic, and yet we’re throwing it away. I created this egg in a free, open source software in just an afternoon using procedural geometry to automate most of the process. I could 3D print it at home. Therefore, it baffles me that everything from our jewelry to our architecture is simpler than ever.
The memory of oppression clings to the gilded images that were once used by the rulers of Versailles and Moscow. That is why we reject them. But I truly believe that they can mean something else now. They are a reminder that creative power belongs in the hands of the people, and it can be ours if we reach out and take it.
